Scholarships

Individuals affected with Sickle Cell Disease may apply for scholarship funds to assist with higher learning expenses such as books, tuition, school legal/medical plans, or room and board.  Please review the current list of scholarships provided to individuals affected with Sickle Cell.

 

 

Arthur D. Brown/David E. Pryor Scholarship Fund

 

The Ohio Sickle Cell and Health Association and its Board of Trustees have established  a scholarship fund for individuals diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease.  The scholarship is designed to assist with the cost of education at an accredited college, university or technical/vocational school.

 

  • Part-time enrollment:  $250 annually (4 scholarships awarded each year)
  • Full-time enrollment:  $500 annually (8 scholarships awarded each year)

 

Kermit B. Nash Academic Scholarship

 

The purpose/goal of the program is to reward academic achievement of individuals with sickle cell disease and to promote their pursuit of educational goals. 

 

  • One award for a total of $5,000 per academic year, up to 4 years.  Award will be disbursed at $2,500 per semester (Fall and Spring) based on academic status.

 

All graduating high school seniors who are United States citizens and permanent residents with sickle cell disease are eligible. (Individuals with sickle cell trait are not eligible)


Qualification/Selection factors:

  • Grade Point Average: Minimum of 3.0 unless special hardship demonstrated
  • General academic achievement and promise
  • SAT Scores
  • Leadership and community service
  • Quality of essay

 

Severity of academic challenges/obstacles posed by sickle cell disease

 

 

Student must remain in "good standing" by definition of college.  Official             college transcripts required each semester prior to disbursement of award.       One Semester of academic probation forfeits disbursement; two consecutive semesters of academic probation forfeits the scholarship.


Candidates will be asked to write a personal essay, not to exceed 1,000 words, on any aspect of the impact of sickle cell disease on their lives or on society.
