(OSCHA) celebrates World Sickle Cell Day (June 19th, now shared with Juneteenth) and September as National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Globally and across the nation, at the statewide and local levels, sickle cell awareness events are scheduled, including festivals, galas, walks, and Sickle Cell Sabbath Weekend.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cOSCHA provides education, advocacy, and support year-round, but September is the month that we increase awareness and information about sickle cell disease, sickle cell trait, and other hemoglobin disorders,\u201d said Annie J. Please mark your calendar to join us in Illinois this fall!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1514\" src=\"https:\/\/ohiosicklecell.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Banner.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ohiosicklecell.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Banner.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/ohiosicklecell.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Banner-300x63.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ohiosicklecell.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Banner-1024x213.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ohiosicklecell.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Banner-768x160.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ohiosicklecell.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Banner-1536x320.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sicklecelldisease.org\/get-involved\/events\/annual-national-convention\/\">View Convention Highlight<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Statewide<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1408 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ohiosicklecell.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/SCS.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ohiosicklecell.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/SCS.jpg 592w, https:\/\/ohiosicklecell.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/SCS-300x293.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/>Sickle Cell Sabbath is an interfaith outreach campaign aimed at educating and increasing awareness within the faith-based community about sickle cell disease and the need for minority blood donors.\u00a0 Although sickle cell disease affects individuals of African ancestry at higher rates, persons with heritage from Spanish-speaking regions in the Western Hemisphere (South America, the Caribbean, and Central America), the Middle East, India, and Mediterranean countries such as Turkey, Greece, and Italy can also be affected.\u00a0\u00a0The goal of the Sickle Cell Sabbath is simple:\u00a0 increase the number of available blood donors within these groups.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A statewide initiative,\u00a0Sickle Cell Sabbath, is a coordinated, cooperative effort between the ODH Sickle Cell Services Program, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/odh.ohio.gov\/wps\/portal\/gov\/odh\/know-our-programs\/sickle-cell-services\/publications\/regional-projects\">State-Funded Regional Sickle Cell Projects<\/a>, regional blood programs in Ohio (participation may vary) and various statewide and\/or local faith-based groups and organizations.\u00a0 All religious denominations are encouraged to participate.<\/p>\n<p>Programs across Ohio are hosting various events. Religious organizations participate in the Sickle Cell Sabbath Weekend (the Third weekend) on Saturday and Sunday. These awareness events provide information and help recruit blood donors for our patient population, who rely on transfusions as part of their treatment for sickle cell disease.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Call to Action\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1364 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ohiosicklecell.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"175\" \/>What Can You Do?\u00a0\u00a0Help dispel the myths and communicate the facts about sickle cell disease to your family, friends, and community. Since 1960, our organization and partners have been at the forefront of improving the quality of health, life, and services for individuals, families, and communities affected by sickle cell and related conditions. Along with other programs nationwide, we are promoting the search for a cure for all individuals with sickle cell disease worldwide.
